Overview

- Duration: Full day (approx. 12 hours round trip)
- Departure: Early morning from your hotel in Cusco
- Difficulty: Moderate to challenging (approx. 2.5–3 hours of hiking each way)
- Altitude: Up to 4,300 m (acclimatization in Cusco strongly recommended)
Route
- Early pick-up from your hotel (around 4:30 AM) and drive south through the Andean highlands. Stop in Cusipata for breakfast.
- Continue by vehicle to the trailhead at Santa Lucía. Begin the trek across high-altitude landscapes with alpacas, llamas, and sweeping mountain views.
- After 2.5–3 hours, reach the fortress of Waqra Pukara, whose twin rock spires resemble horns (“waqra” in Quechua). Guided tour of Inca and pre-Inca structures, ceremonial platforms, and breathtaking viewpoints above the Apurímac Canyon.
- Enjoy a packed lunch surrounded by panoramic vistas.
- Begin the return hike to the trailhead and drive back to Cusco, arriving in the evening.
