Day 1: Cusco – Km 82 – Llactapata – Ayapata
- Pick-up from your hotel in Cusco and transfer to the trailhead at Km 82 (Piscacucho).
- After breakfast, the trek begins with gentle hiking along the Urubamba River.
- Visit the Inca site of Patallacta, once an agricultural and checkpoint settlement.
- Continue through small local communities before reaching Ayapata campsite.
Distance: 14 km / 8.7 miles (6–7 hours)
Campsite Altitude: 3,300 m / 10,826 ft
Difficulty: Moderate
Day 2: Ayapata – Dead Woman’s Pass – Pacaymayu – Runcuraccay – Chaquicocha
- Today is the toughest but also one of the most rewarding days.
- Ascend to the trek’s highest point: Dead Woman’s Pass (Warmiwañusca) at 4,215 m / 13,828 ft.
- Descend into the Pacaymayu Valley for lunch.
- Continue up to the second pass, visiting the ruins of Runcuraccay and enjoying views of waterfalls.
- Visit Sayacmarca, a stunning Inca site, before reaching Chaquicocha campsite.
- Stargazing opportunities at night under crystal-clear skies.

Day 3: Chaquicocha – Phuyupatamarca – Wiñay Wayna
- This is the most scenic and relaxed day of the trek.
- Enter the cloud forest and enjoy sweeping views of the Salkantay and Vilcabamba ranges.
- Visit Phuyupatamarca (“Town in the Clouds”) and Intipata (“Terraces of the Sun”).
- Arrive at Wiñay Wayna, the most impressive Inca site after Machu Picchu, and set up camp nearby.

Campsite Altitude: 2,600 m / 8,530 ft

Day 4: Sun Gate – Machu Picchu – Cusco
- Early morning hike to Inti Punku (Sun Gate) for your first unforgettable view of Machu Picchu.
- Descend into the citadel and enjoy a 2-hour guided tour covering temples, terraces, and plazas.
- Free time to explore further or (optional, extra cost) hike Huayna Picchu or Machu Picchu Mountain.
- Bus down to Aguas Calientes for lunch (not included), then return by train to Ollantaytambo and transfer back to Cusco.
